一些研究印度文学和泰戈尔的学者表示，没有见过这首诗。

香港女作家张小娴“认下”首创权。在一个网页上，这首诗的署名为香港知名女作家张小娴。笔者是在网上对她的小说《荷包里的单人床》所附的读者评论中发现线索的。原文是：“‘世界上最遥远的距离，不是生与死的距离，不是天各一方，而是，我就站在你面前，你却不知道我爱你’。读到这段话，我就从此爱上了张小娴的小说”。

《荷包里的单人床》在2000年版中，张小娴专门就这个文坛公案作了澄清。序中说，小说完成于1997年5月，讲的是一个暗恋的故事，封面那段话是借书中主人公苏盈之口说的。

张小娴在序中称：别人都以为我是抄泰戈尔的，只有我和我的出版社知道我没有抄，这真是世界上最遥远的距离。
